Mark Rietveld

Director and Principal Architect

Mark Rietveld and Brenden Cook lead the studio with more than five decades of combined experience in the design and delivery of refined custom homes across Western Australia. Having worked together for over two decades, they bring a consistent and collaborative approach to the practice, remaining directly involved throughout all stages of design and construction.

Each project is developed as a considered response to site, landscape and brief, with an emphasis on restraint, clarity and enduring design quality. The studio works at a measured pace, allowing each design to be carefully developed and resolved from concept through to completion.

Prior to founding Rietveld Architects, Mark and Brenden held senior roles within some of Perth’s premier architectural practices specialising in luxury residential design, with Mark serving as Principal Design Architect for over 14 years.

Projects designed by Mark across his career have received significant HIA recognition at both State and National level, including at least three State Home of the Year honours, together with National awards for Apartment of the Year, Home of the Year and Renovation of the Year.

Relationships between wall, void, structure and light are considered as part of a unified whole, ensuring spatial balance is experienced intuitively rather than imposed.

Material Integrity

Materials are selected for longevity and authenticity.
Texture, weight, and junction are resolved carefully so that construction expresses intention rather than decoration.

Light & Spatial Sequence

The progression through a home is choreographed deliberately.
Compression and release, threshold and arrival, shadow and illumination form part of a spatial narrative that unfolds over time.

Restraint

Restraint is fundamental.
We avoid embellishment for its own sake, preferring clarity of form and disciplined detailing to define architectural character.

Craft & Resolution

Precision in documentation and construction oversight ensures that the integrity of the architectural idea is maintained through execution.
